Minibus Stolen from Care Home - 15th September 2009

The actions of callous thieves, who stole a minibus from outside a care home for the elderly has caused trips and outings to be cancelled, the theft of the minibus has also meant doctor and hospital appointments are much more difficult for residents at the care home in Banstead, Surrey.

The care home minibus worth £40,000 is a lifeline for the 80 elderly residents who live in the two residential homes it serves.

The Chairman of the charity that runs the care homes said: “The theft is a particularly callous act perpetrated towards frail and elderly people for whom the opportunity of our weekly trips out for to the coast and to places of interest means so much.

“It is also used to transport them to hospital and for doctors appointments.

“At the end of a recent trip to the coast, a 102 year-old resident was so moved as to comment she had never expected to see the sea again.

“For the time being, we shall have to stop all of the weekly outings and at least four other special days out have had to be cancelled."

The minibus theft from outside the nursing home on August 26 has meant a planned boat trip and other treats have been cancelled. The Mercedes minibus, which had been adapted to take wheelchairs and also has a wheelchair lift was bought for £40,000 12 years ago.
