Hunt for School Minibus Arsonists - 13th July 2009

Croydon Police are hunting arsonists who set a school minibus ablaze in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The minibus was totally gutted by the blaze outside Oakwood School, in Godstone Road, Purley. And firefighters believe it could have been an attempt to set the school building itself on fire. The leaping flames and thick smoke attracted the attention of people at a party in a house opposite.

One partygoer said: "We could see this black smoke in the sky, so we went outside to see what was happening. "We were going to call the fire brigade, but a motorist had pulled over and already called them." The man said he had not seen anyone near the minibus, which was parked in the forecourt of the school, apart from the motorist. Purley firefighters were called to the scene at 1.56am on Sunday.

The Fire Crew Watch Manager said: "It looks like someone has tried to burn a vehicle and push it towards the actual building of the school." A spokesman for Croydon police said: "Police were called by the London Fire Brigade at about 2am on Sunday to Oakwood School, where the fire brigade were dealing with a vehicle fire." He added: "Severe damage was caused to the vehicle. The fire is being treated as suspicious, and Croydon police are investigating. No arrests have been made."
